Nyerere Presidential Library

The Nyerere Center will host a world-class Presidential library and historical archive, fulfilling Mwalimu Nyerere’s passion for reading and lifelong learning. The library will reach the entire country through its mobile library program and educational media productions and publications.

The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation seeks to build a modern building to house a research library containing Mwalimu Nyerere’s personal papers and those of other important figures in Tanzanian history. The facility will also reach out to isolated parts of the country with mobile libraries bringing books and internet access to rural communities. Additionally, a children’s library will introduce young people to books, new technologies, and dramatic historical material. A technology laboratory will also provide internet access to selected material and web resources. The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation has already begun collecting an oral archive of audio and video recordings of interviews with dozens of historical figures. A production facility will help bring the historical material and research of the Foundation to the public, by producing books, pamphlets, radio broadcasts and TV documentaries. Finally, the library will provide key historical insights to the new situations under consideration by the policy research institute and the center for peace negotiation.
