Center for Peace and Policy Research
Peace is at the core of Mwalimu Nyerere’s legacy. The Nyerere Center will bring its capacity for research and creative problem-solving to the urgent task of conflict prevention and management in Africa. Climate change and population growth will intensify conflicts in East Africa during the next century. A dedicated center for research will bring an innovative African perspective to coming challenges.
The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation seeks to provide answers to the difficult challenges facing East Africa today. In the next 50 years East Africa’s population is expected to nearly triple to equal the population of the United States. Since independence Tanzania’s population has nearly tripled, and much can be learned from the effects of that growth; the projections for the next 50 years only reinforce those trends, under increasing environmental social pressure. Strategic policies, rooted in the realities of local culture and politics, will be crucial to sustainable growth and social stability in the 21st century. The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation will assemble an expert staff and resources:
To seek creative solutions to intractable problems
To imagine future challenges and opportunities
To provide direction for navigating the challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century
To overcome the challenges of implementation by understanding the political process
Through the National Development Dialogue, the Foundation will involve citizens across the region to contribute to the discussion and to draw on their insights in envisioning new policies.
